Draw what you want,
but wield correctly the pencil

We begin by clarifying which one is the understanding correct.
Too often, you see children challenging the pens with all their fingers or in a disorderly way.

The understanding correct pen or pencil provides: 

  • the grip clamp, between the thumb and the index, and the first phalanx of the middle finger acts as a support to ensure a regular trim, ring, and little finger, semi-folded, ensure the contact of the hand with the paper. 
  • the graph tool is gripped in about two fingers from the tip. 

As we learn to hold the pencil in the correct way?

Describes 3 stages of development: it was primitive, outlets, transitional, and took the mature (Henderson and Shneck, 1990).

  • to 10-12 months the prehension is of type handheldgrabbing force the pencil with the whole palm (without the use of the fingers): this limits the variation of movements and the field of vision of the track left on the sheet.

Very often, we draw or write the child with what happens (pencils, pens, crayons), but attention must also be given to this aspect, and graphical tools have a sequence of difficulty.

This is the sequence with which the child makes experiences graphical tools:

  • Finger
  • Brush and big order
  • Sturdy pencil and the end
  • Pencil
  • Wax pastel
  • Pastel
  • Pen

What games can we propose to train the grasping?

The driving physics for teaching to hold the pencil correctly can be annoying. In the following, we propose some suggestions to avoid these activities becoming aversive and uncomfortable to the child.

Very useful is the use of Grip that suggest visually and sensorially to the child where to hold the graph tool.

  • the use of rubber bands or adhesive tape with which the child must hold the pencil
  • pencils with sockets already present
  • use crayons or pencils court, therefore, induce prehension most proximal and most end of the tool

Also...

  • Keep it between the palm of the hand and the last 3 fingers a ball, so that those fingers are isolated from the grasp of the pen
  • How to use a sock or glove with holes free only at the level of the first two fingers (thumb and index)

We do not want the child to become an expert painter or the scriptures in any way, or anything that will draw or write; the important thing is that the face of the grip correctly pencils, pens, and markers!
